Product Description

In the Paiwan tribe, each village could have one or a number of chieftains. They were considered the protectors of the tribe, helping those who had suffered misfortune, through tough times. Due to their high position, chieftains did not carry out farming. They were considered to own the land and the members of the common class tended the crops, offering a portion of the harvest to the chieftain. This motif of several human heads together in a row, hand carved to form this unique hair pin, served as a reminder to the chieftains that their authority was a privilege that was bestowed to them by the people.

Artist lntroduction

Kamuli Pelen is a member of the Paiwan tribe from Pingtung County in southern Taiwan. For the past 11 years, he has carved art from driftwood and riverbed stones, mostly based on traditional themes. But, while his source of inspiration is his tribe’s traditions, he prefers to produce works that people can use or appreciate in their daily lives, such as bowls, decorative masks and hair pins. He began his art career as a chef creating fruit carvings, and confesses to having had a hard but colorful life, with his experiences being revealed in the richness of his works.
