A square-shaped bag such as this one was traditionally taken along with members of the Amis tribe while working in the fields. It was used to hold betel nut. This was chewed habitually, something like chewing gum in the West.
This bag is completely hand made and features hand woven components such as the strap and front flap. The patterns are in bright colors preferred by the Amis, and represent modified traditional tribal motifs. The tassels at the side are often seen on bags worn by tribal members during special ceremonies. Although modeled on tradition, this bag features modern touches, such as a zippered pouch, making it a convenient and attention-getting accessory for travel or every day.
