Product Description

This hand engraved and hand painted leather cosmetic bag features hand stitching along the sides also in leather. The pattern across the center is a modified version of the Paiwan tribe’s hundred-pace pit viper motif. This snake (scientific name: Deinagkistrodon acutus), considered the most toxic of the Asian pit vipers, got its name from the claim that once bitten a victim will die before being able to walk 100 paces. To the indigenous peoples of Taiwan, the hundred-pace pit viper is highly revered, especially among the Paiwan, Rukai and Bunun tribes.

Artist lntroduction

Rerung is a member of the Paiwan tribe from Shizih Township in Pingtung County of southern Taiwan. Rerung studied sculpture and woodcarving, but gradually turned to leather due to its lighter weight and better pliability. She applies her background in sculpture to her leather designs along with her desire to create products that can be used in daily life. Her workshop employs more than 20 local indigenous women who create a variety of leather products by hand from Rerung’s or their own designs.
